Disney Dreams Come True!

Come April, some 18 Hospitality & Resort Management students will be flying off to a dream holiday destination - Disney World, Orlando, USA! Instead of being tourists there, they will be there as interns, enjoying the golden opportunity to learn how Disney World is run. These students were interviewed and selected by Ms Sue Sharpe, from International Recruitment, Disney Worldwide Services, Inc.

Besides internships, our students will also attend a certificate programme with Rosen College of Hospitality Management with the University of Central Florida.

Up Close and Personal with UN Secretary-General

Imagine meeting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon face to face! Nursing graduate Rumya Ananthan (extreme right in picture) did NYP proud by being one of four youths selected to visit the United Nations to present Secretary-General Ban (extreme left) with a report on healthcare issues among youths. Rumya, the only Singaporean selected for this mission, went to New York in late October in conjunction with the UN General Assembly.

“The feeling of being there at the UN was indescribable; there were so many magic moments. It was something I will remember all my life,” recalled an elated Rumya, who is passionate about healthcare. Rumya presented a report highlighting five key health concerns among youths: smoking-related problems, HIV, healthy diets, alcohol and gender issues.

Masters of the Micromouse

Complicated mazes? Unknown paths? These did not deter the NYP team at all. A team from the School of Engineering has proven their mettle by winning the champion and second runner-up positions in the Micromouse Expert Class of the All-Japan International Micromouse Competition 2007, held in November in Japan. They emerged victorious despite stiff competition from countries like Korea, Japan and the USA.

A micromouse is a small mobile robot programmed to navigate its way through an unknown maze within the fastest time possible. The Micromouse Expert Class is the most difficult class in the competition, with its complex mazes and sharp turns.

Students Win Award in France

Three final-year Digital Media Design students won the Autodesk Award, Chained Animation category, at the Les E.Magiciens Festival in France in late November. Perry Yap, Clara Chua and Harold Cheng produced an original clip to win the top award, beating 12 other teams from top French and European Universities, which participated in the same category.

The annual Festival celebrates youth digital creation and is organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Valenciennes. The Chained Animation event required teams to produce a 10-second computer graphic animation based on an 'imposed' picture given to all teams. Winners' works were screened at the closing ceremony of the Festival.

Singapore Packaging Star Award 2007:
Our Budding Designers Bagged Five Awards

Picture this: it looks like a typical first-aid kit box (above) with its stark white packaging and a red cross planted in the middle of the box. But upon closer scrutiny, you will find step-by-step instructions on making pre-mixed bak ku teh. Spring the box open and you will find items like bak ku teh herbal mix and Chinese herbs. This innovative idea called the 'Cure for Homesick Bak Ku Teh' is the idea of two second-year Industrial Design students, Cheng Si Hui and Sara Leow.

Explained Si Hui, “This packaging is specially designed for Singaporeans who travel overseas and are craving for local food. Hence, a first-aid kit box to their ‘rescue.’”

This packaging idea recently won an award at the Singapore Packaging Star Award 2007 Student Category. In total, NYP’s Industrial Design students won five awards for their innovative, eye-catching and practical designs. The students attributed their success to their lecturers’ constant guidance and suggestions on making their packaging stand out from the crowd.
